Niccolò Machiavelli was a premier political philsopher of the Italian Renaissance. His most notable work, 'The Prince,' while considered by some a work that would be favored by ruthless authoritarians, was in reality a patriotic work intended as a call to action for the leaders of the weak and fractured Florentine city-state. Machiavelli's desire revealed within was for a powerful 'prince' that would bring unity and discipline to the factions of Florence, that his beloved state could possibly defend itself from the constant threat of foreign invasion.
