Description

Tomás de Torquemada, Inquistor General of Spain from 1483 to 1498 is the most widely known individual leader of the Spanish Inquisition. During the attempts of Ferdinand II and Isabella I to fully Christianize Spain he organized the means of rooting out and punishing religious crimes throughout the kingdom. Though he did authorize torture as a means to this end, historical study has shown that Torquemada's life and practices were not as extreme as his legacy has portrayed them to have been.
