Description

The first true American naval hero, Scottish-born John Paul Jones carried the flag of the young republic on a series of daring raids in British waters. In 1778 he and his ship 'Ranger' raided the English town of Whitehaven, then days later entered the Irish harbor of Carrickfergus and captured the British sloop-of-war HMS 'Drake' after a fierce gun battle. But his most famous exploit was aboard the 'Bonhomme Richard' in 1779. Leading a squadron of raiding ships toward Ireland, Jones encountered a convoy escorted by the sloop-of-war HMS 'Serapis'. Half an hour into the resulting battle, Serapis' captain asked whether Jones would strike colors. Jones is said to have replied simply: 'I have not yet begun to fight!' Although the 'Bonhomme Richard' did not survive the battle, Jones succeeded in capturing the 'Serapis' and moving his command over to her. While the victory was limited in scope (the entire convoy managed to escape in the confusion), the fact that an American ship could defeat a ship of the Royal Navy in single combat was a matter of great pride for the new American nation, and Jones' reply to the 'Serapis' became a national motto.

It is almost pointless to list the accomplishments of Benjamin Franklin. There is no part of the early American nation that he did not impact. As a newspaper editor, inventor, scientist, diplomat, governor, scholar, abolitionist, and even postmaster-general, Franklin's influence is still felt to this day.

Description

At 363 miles long, the Erie Canal, connecting the Hudson River (at Albany) to the Great Lakes (at Buffalo), was the second-longest canal in the world when it was completed in 1821. The ability to move ships to and from the Ohio region was a major benefit for the US, as it was previously difficult or impossible to transport large quantities of Ohio grain to the East Coast without first distilling it into whiskey. The new canal reduced the trip from Cleveland to New York by about half. New York City in particular benefited from the new canal, as grain from Ohio could now be easily transported to its ports and sold on its markets.

Description

Amid the growing debate over American slavery, a sizeable portion of the population (mostly in the south) had come to believe that free blacks could not be integrated into a white society and therefore they must be resettled elsewhere. Some suggested sending them to the relatively empty American West, while others thought Haiti or Panama would be the right place. The American Colonization Society, founded in 1816 by Robert Finley, held the view that the best place for Africans was Africa itself. With this in mind, several expeditions were outfitted in the 1820s to acquire land on the West African coast and construct a colony. The first two failed due to the inhospitable climate and poor relations with the native Africans, but the third in 1821-22 succeeded in establishing a foothold at what is now Monrovia, Liberia (named for President James Monroe, a member of the Society). During the next twenty years, over 4000 freedmen and freeborn blacks immigrated to Africa - although the mortality rate remained so high that the colony's population did not reach 5000 until nearly a century later.
