Description

Romagna was officially ceded to the Papal States by Rudolf I of Germany in 1278, though Papal control over it was little more than nominal and the area was divided among a series of regional lords such as the Ordelaffi of Forlì and the Malatesta of Rimini. The situation started to change in the late 15th century when Popes Innocent VIII and Alexander VI began to reassert Papal authority in the fragmented region. Other states also seized various part of Romagna, primarily neighbouring maritime powers such as Venice and the Florentine Republic. In 1500 Cesare Borgia, the illegitimate son of Pope Alexander VI and his long-term mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei, carved out for himself an ephemeral Grand Duchy of Romagna comprising the territory he'd captured in Urbino and Camerino. After his failed ploy to bribe the garrison at Bologna so his army could take the city unhindered, Borgia's generals turned against him, precipitating his fall from power and untimely death in 1507. Following a period of both foreign and Papal occupation during the Italian Wars, Romagna's time in the sun ended with the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559, which finally divided the region between the Papal States and the duchies of Parma and Modena.
