Description
The dissolution of Gran Colombia, the ambitious South American federation founded by Simón Bolívar in 1819, occurred in 1831, just over a decade after its formation and a year after Bolívar's death. Gran Colombia was comprised of present-day Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and parts of Panama, Peru and Brazil. The federation faced significant challenges, including regional tensions and political disputes. The primary factors leading to its dissolution were ideological and political strife between supporters of Bolívar's centralist vision and those advocating for more regional autonomy, and the fact that Bolívar's death and the end of the Wars of Independence meant that the two guiding principles holding the nation together had gone. In 1830, Venezuela seceded from Gran Colombia, followed by Ecuador in 1831, leaving only Colombia. This marked the end of the federation and the birth of the independent nations of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. Gran Colombia's dissolution underscored the difficulties of maintaining a vast, diverse federation and the enduring quest for national sovereignty among South American countries in the 19th century.Actions
