Description

By the turn of the 19th century the Nguyen dynasty had cemented its rule over Viet Nam and imposed a degree of centralization not seen since ancient times. The ruling Emperor, Gia Long, had successfully reformed the state bureaucracy and brought in French advisors and officers in order to modernize the army. One policy of particular importance was the question of the new state's official religion - the imperial family practiced Ruism (Confucianism) and sought to maintain close ties with China, whereas the majority of their subjects were Buddhist, as the Vietnamese had been for centuries. In addition, the French had brought increasing numbers of Catholic missionaries and teachers with them, whose presence Gia Long tolerated.
