Description
Wolfe Tone's rebellion, often referred to as the Irish Rebellion of 1798, was a significant uprising against British rule in Ireland led by Theobald Wolfe Tone, an Irish nationalist and founding member of the United Irishmen. The rebellion, inspired by the ideals of the French and American Revolutions, was driven by a desire for Irish independence and received financial and military backing from both those Republics. It began in May 1798 and included various uprisings across Ireland, with Wexford (Leinster) and Mayo (Connacht) being particular hotbeds of dissent. However, despite some initial successes such as at Castlebar in August 1798, the rebellion faced a brutal British response, marked by atrocities on both sides. Ultimately, British forces - along with their Irish loyalist allies - suppressed the rebellion, leading to its defeat by the autumn of 1798 and Ireland's formal union with Great Britain in 1801. Wolfe Tone was captured, tried for treason, and died by suicide in prison. Whilst the rebellion failed in its immediate goal of achieving Irish independence, it left a lasting legacy and contributed to the broader struggle for Irish self-determination in the years that followed.Actions
