Description
The struggle between Royalists and Republicans in revolutionary Haiti was a central and tumultuous aspect of the Haitian Revolution, which spanned from 1791 to 1804 and saw the nation ruled as not only a republic, but also both a kingdom and an empire. Initially sparked by enslaved Africans and Afro-descendants seeking freedom and equality, the revolution culminated in Haiti becoming the first independent Black republic in 1804. The Royalists, often led by mixed-race or free people of color, sought to maintain ties to the French monarchy and preserve social hierarchies - such as creating orders of nobility and chivalry along the ancient French model. In contrast, the Republicans, led by figures like Toussaint l'Ouverture and Alexandre Sabès Pétion, aimed for full independence and the establishment of a Black-led republic. This struggle culminated in the Haitian Declaration of Independence in 1804, solidifying Haiti's status as a republic, but also foreshadoweding the ongoing political and social tensions to come.Actions
