Description

Following the death of William VI of Holland in 1417 a succession dispute broke out between his brother John, the bishop of Liège, and his daughter Jacqueline, who became duchess of Brabant by marriage. William had previously made the Dutch magnates swear allegiance to Jacqueline, but John quickly resigned the bishopric and his holy orders in order to marry the influential duchess of Luxemburg, Elisabeth of Görlitz, and contest the succession. John counted Emperor Sigismund and Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy among his allies, whereas Jacqueline's support was limited to Brabant (whose duke, John IV, she quickly married) and tacit approval from England. The civil war between uncle and niece ravaged Holland until John's death in 1425, by which time Anglo-Burgundian interference had essentially destroyed Holland's independence - the county was willed to Philip on Jacqueline's death in 1433, but had already been administered by him since 1428 under the terms of the Treaty of Delft.
