Description

The May Revolution ('Revolución de Mayo') was a week-long series of events that took place from May 18 to 25, 1810, in Buenos Aires, capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. This Spanish colony included roughly the territories of present-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Brazil. The result was the removal of Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros and the establishment of a local government, the Primera Junta ('First Junta'), and the effective start of the Argentine War of Independence - although no declaration of independence from Spain was issued at the time and the Primera Junta nominally continued to govern in the name of the king, Ferdinand VII. The May Revolution led to the creation of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (later known as Argentina), which wanted to bring Paraguay under its control - an event that would have unforeseen consequences for both countries. News of the revolutionary events in Buenos Aires stunned royalist citizens in Asunción, who rose up under the influential soldier and later Dictator of Paraguay, Fulgencio Yegros, in order to assert their own independence from the revolutionary Argentinians.

Description

The Uruguayan Civil War, known in Spanish as the Great War ('Guerra Grande'), was a series of armed conflicts between the leaders of Uruguayan independence. Whilst officially the war started in 1839, it was a part of a guerrilla war that started in 1832 and had its roots in 1825, when an insurrection for the independence of Oriental Province, a historical territory encompassing Uruguay and the Rio Grande do Sul State, was ignited against Brazil. Supporters of the two opposing presidents Rivera and Oribe formed two political parties: the Colorado Party and the National Party, both of which received backing and support from foreign states, including neighboring Brazil and Argentina, as well as European powers - primarily France and the British Empire, but also a legion of Italian volunteers including Giuseppe Garibaldi. The great diversity of nationalities among the military forces supporting the Colorado Party posed difficulties in arguing for their struggle in terms of a 'national liberation', instead, the Colorado Party side argued that they were defending 'humanity' and 'civilization' against 'tyranny'.
