Description

The conquest of Dzungaria took place in the 18th century when the Qing Dynasty of China sought to extend its authority and control over the Dzungar Khanate, a Mongol state located in the former Chagatai lands. The conflict began in the early 1750s and culminated in the Qianlong Emperor's campaign against the Dzungars from 1755 to 1759. The invasion resulted in the near-annihilation of the Dzungar people, with many killed, and others expelled or assimilated into the Qing Dynasty's territories. The Qing government's brutal suppression of the Dzungars is regarded as a dark chapter in Chinese history and is often referred to as a genocide. This campaign solidified Qing control over Dzungaria (now Xinjiang) and contributed to the demographic and political landscape of the region that persists today, with the Uighur people being the descendants of the ancient Dzungars (an Oirat tribe).

By the 18th century, the Qing Empire had undertaken an expansionist policy in order to subdue neighboring regions such as Dzungaria, Taiwan and Korea. Though the Ming and Jin efforts to control Korea were met with limited success - it largely maintained its sovereignty and independence despite a nominal subservience to Beijing - the degree of control held by the Qing was much greater, with Korea being integrated as the province of Chaoxian until the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895.

After the Qing conquest, the Chinese began to incorporate Altishahr and the Tarim Basin into their empire. This territory along with Dzungaria came to be known as Xinjiang. Although the followers of Afaq Khoja known as the Afaqi Khojas resisted Qing rule, their rebellion was put down and the Afaqi Khojas were removed from power.
