Description

Malacca was one of the foremost powers of the East Indies, regularly vying with Mataram, Brunei and the Aceh Sultanate for dominance in the region. Its legendary Hindu king Parameswara converted to Islam in around 1390, adopting the title of Iskandar Shâh and introducing Islam to the southern half of the Malay peninsula. (According to historically dubious accounts, the northern Kedah Sultanate had adopted Islam as early as 1136 AD). A lucrative trade hub following the collapse of the Majapahit Empire, Malacca was long sought after by the European colonial powers seeking to expand trade routes from their holdings in India and East Africa. In the end, it was the Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque, colonial governor of Goa, who beat the Spanish to be the first to conquer Malacca in the summer of 1511.
