Description

The premature death of Bâbur at only 47 shook the fledgling Mughal Empire to its core, as his sons were young, inexperienced in statecraft and warfare, and lacked a support base. During his life, Bâbur had enjoyed immense personal popularity, but little thought had been given to the succession and his children had been largely kept out of affairs of state. Humâyûn, Bâbur's eldest son and successor, was considered ineffectual, lazy and incapable of holding his father's empire together. These fears were quickly justified when the Pashtun warlord Farid Khan - one of Bâbur's generals - swiftly declared himself Sher Shâh Suri and set about imposing his will on the rapidly disintegrating empire. Over the next five years, Suri reconquered northern India from the Indus to Assam, establishing regional capitals at Sasaram and Patna, and winning every battle he ever fought. His immense success as ruler of the short-lived Sur Empire (1538-1556) forced the defeated Humâyûn into exile in Safavid Persia, where he would spend the following decade gathering supporters and formenting rebellions across the border.

Description

The complete collapse of the Mughal Empire under Humâyûn was almost as impressive in scale as its formation had been under his father Bâbur. During his exile in Persia during the 1540s, Humâyûn befriended the Safavid ruler Tahmasp I, to whom he swore vassalage in exchange for soldiers and weapons to reconquer his former empire from the weakened Sur dynasty. In return, Tahmasp demanded Humâyûn embrace the Shi'a faith of the Safavids, which he and his father Ismail I had been spreading across Persia since the 1490s. Humâyûn, desperate for assistance in reclaiming his birthright, was not persuaded by the request, but also knew that without such promises more substantial support from Tahmasp would not be forthcoming. Ultimately, the Mughals remained a Sunni dynasty until their final collapse in the 19th century.
