Description
The Novgorod Republic had a long and complicated history of shifting alliances and foreign policy goals as the political narrative of the region evolved. Traditionally the easternmost trading hub of the Hanseatic League, the city became immensely wealthy owing to its monopoly of the Russian fur trade, and its merchants sailed to ports as far away as Alexandria and Constantinople. By the mid-15th century the Republic was rich but politically isolated, as although its territories were vast they were sparsely populated and poorly defensible. Always in danger of being encircled, Novgorod's primary threats were the Teutonic Order to the south, the Swedes to the west, and the other Rus' princes - primarily Moscow - to the east. Another approach would have been to repair relations with the Hansa and attempt to reclaim Baltic trading rights on Gotland.Actions

Description
The 14th century witnessed the start of Novgorod's long struggle with Moscow for supremacy. Internecine disputes among the republic's leaders weakened it in the face of growing Muscovite strength. Although it became a vassal of Moscow after the Muscovite invasions in 1456 and 1470, Novgorod was allowed to retain its self-government. It was not until 1478 that it came under Moscow's complete control and lost its freedom. Novgorod retained its commercial position until St. Petersburg was built in 1703.Actions

Description
The series of calamitous events which ultimately led to the downfall of the Novgorod Republic in 1478 can be traced back to the factional struggles between the Archbishop (the de facto ruler of the Republic), the boyars, and the influential merchant families supporting the claims of various foreign princes. Among the most poweful of these was the Lithuanian magnate Mikhailo Olelkovich, a cousin of Ivan III of Moscow whose downfall was the 1481 attempted coup against his liege, Casimir IV of Poland. During the early 1470s, Mikhailo had been invited by the anti-Muscovite faction in Novgorod to take control of the city and expel the forces loyal to Ivan. In turn, he was to marry the faction's influential leader Marfa Boretskaya and serve either as Prince in his own name or Regent in Casimir's. To further complicate matters, among Mikhailo's entourage was a controversial Hebrew scholar and translator named Skhariya (Zacharia) 'the Jew', whose radical teachings were considered heretical by Orthodox and Catholic clergy alike. Whilst Mikhailo and his intended political bride Marfa were both Orthodox, Mikhailo's liege Casimir and many of his Polish and Lithuanian retainers were Catholic. These interwoven factors, combined with the ever-present threat of a Muscovite invasion, led to tensions boiling over and a mass persecution of Skhariya and his followers (many of whom were not in fact Jews), headed by the influential Archbishop Gennady. The saga came to a head with the Battle of Shelon in July 1471, in which Ivan's forces defeated the Novgorodians and the Republic was forced to become a vassal of Moscow. Following the loss of his prize, Mikhailo fled the city and returned to Lithuania in disgrace, whilst Skhariya languished in prison until his execution on Ivan's order in 1491.Actions
