Description

Saïd bin Sultan al-Busaidi, known as the Lion of Oman, was an Ibadi Imam and the Sultan of the Omani Empire from 1804 until his death in 1856. Considered among the greatest Arabian rulers of the age, he is known for having unified the succession by wiping out rival clans, strengthening the Omani army and navy with the aid of British officers and engineers, and expanding Omani dominion in East Africa. By the end of Saïd's reign, the ancient sultanates of East Africa had either been conquered or forced into vassalage, and he had moved his capital from Muscat to the island of Zanzibar. He fostered close relations with Britain, secured trading rights with the United States, and - with the East India Company - launched joint expeditions against the Wahhabis of Arabia.
