Description
A former protégé of Khan Tokhtamysh, by 1396 Edigu had overthrown his master and carved out his own domain across the Volga, which later became known as the Nogai Horde. The following year Edigu was appointed commander-in-chief of the Golden Horde's armies, and in August 1399 he routed the combined armies of Tokhtamysh and a coalition of Lithuanians and Baltic crusaders at the banks of the Vorskla River. As the last of the great khans of the Golden Horde, Edigu successfully reunified all of Jochi's former lands across the Steppe - the last time this feat was accomplished - and managed to reassert Tatar dominance over most of the Russian princes, many of whose lands he raided and burned. In 1406, agents dispatched by Edigu found and murdered Tokhtamysh in Siberia, but within two years Edigu's position had been weakened by prolonged campaigning across his vast territories, and in 1410 he was overthrown and exiled to Sarai Jük - where he would be assassinated (by one of Tokhtamysh's sons) in 1419.Actions

Description
Until the disintegration of the Mongol empire (14th cent.) the khans themselves were under the suzerainty of the great khan at Karakorum. In the early 14th century the empire of the Golden Horde adopted Islam as its official religion. Thus, Russia was exposed to both Muslim and Asian civilization. Internecine warfare among the Tatar leaders and attempts by the Russian princes, such as Dmitri Donskoi, to end tributary payments contributed to the decline of the Empire of the Golden Horde in the late 14th cent. The state was conquered by Timur, who in 1395 dealt a final blow by sacking Sarai Berke. After his death the empire broke up into the independent khanates of Astrakhan, Kazan, Crimea, and Sibir.Actions
