Description
The League of Cambrai was a coalition of European powers formed in 1508 during the Italian Wars. Initially comprising the Papal States, the Holy Roman Empire, France and Spain, the league aimed to counter the territorial expansion of the Republic of Venice in northern Italy and to re-assert Papal authority over vacant bishoprics the Doge of Venice had illegally filled. Though the league achieved a significant victory at the Battle of Agnadello in 1509, temporarily weakening Venice, the league's members had divergent interests, leading to shifting alliances and its eventual dissolution by 1510. Ultimately, as affairs elsewhere in Europe distracted German and Spanish interest in the venture, the Venetians were able to bribe the French - who hated the Habsburgs far more than the Venetians - to change sides, and in turn even the Pope formed an alliance with the Venetians and went on the counter-offensive.Actions

Action B of 3549 - The Holy League for Papal States
Description
When in 1570 the Turks sent an ultimatum to Venice asking for the ceding of Cyprus and then invaded the island after the Republic of San Marco failed to respond, a great uproar was created in the Catholic world by the facts and rumors of Ottoman atrocities in the last Christian bastion of the eastern Mediterranean. After a first failure in the summer of 1570, Pope Pie V managed to convince major Catholic nations (except France) to join a Holy League against the heathens Turks, and it was proclaimed in May 1571. The League would lead to the great naval victory of Don Juan on the Turks at Lepanto, but would not outlast this first and final triumph. Selim II is rumored to have said, after the news he had lost 200 galleys at Lepanto: 'At Lepanto, the Christians have shaved me. At Cyprus, I cut their arm. My beard will grow again.'Actions
