Description

Like many Mongol realms, the Northern Yuan had previously flirted with an array of different faiths as their armies subjugated the different peoples who practiced them. Various Ilkhans, Chagatai khans and even Great Khans such as Kublai himself had embraced traditional eastern faiths like Buddhism and Nestorian Christianity, whilst others - generally further west - had adopted forms of Islam along with corresponding Arab and Persian cultural identities. By the late 16th century, following a period of relative peace with the Ming dynasty, the Northern Yuan had been exposed to numerous foreign religious influences as a result of increased diplomatic and trade links with China, Transoxiana and the nascent power of Russia. Though the majority of Mongols had always practiced the local shamanism of their ancestors, several Yuan khans had personally adopted other faiths, and by the 1570s the 'Right Wing' of the Yuan horde had become increasingly exposed to Tibetan Buddhism, and the 3rd Dalai Lama had been received at the Northern Yuan court as an esteemed guest. However, the conversion to Buddhism was by no means assured, and competing influences continued to make inroads until the final collapse of the Northern Yuan in 1635.
