Description
The Peace of Westphalia was a series of peace treaties signed between May and October 1648 in Osnabrück and Münster. These treaties ended the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) in the Holy Roman Empire, and the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) between Spain and the Dutch Republic, with Spain formally recognising the independence of the Dutch Republic. The Peace involved the Habsburg realms of Austria and Spain, the Kingdom of France, the Swedish Empire, the Dutch Republic, the Swiss Confederacy, and both the princes of the Holy Roman Empire and the rulers of its free Imperial cities. The diplomatic talks were dominated by Cardinal Richelieu, regent for the infant Louis XIV, who had been instrumental in throwing France's considerable weight behind the Protestant powers of Europe in their struggle against the Emperor and his Spanish allies. Though Louis XIV's father and grandfather had both maintained sympathy towards Calvinism in France, Richelieu was an ardent Catholic and was determined that the young King would grow up to be the same. France's actions were therefore entirely in her own interests: she had been allowed to keep the conquered bishoprics of Metz, Toul and Verdun, and the cities of the Décapole in Alsace. Thus, Westphalia began to shift the European balance of power from the Habsburg alliance of Austria and Spain to Louis XIV's France in the West and her Protestant ally Sweden in the East - who had been promised an indemnity of five million talers as well as Western Pomerania, Wismar, Bremen, Verden and an all-important seat in the Reichstag. Though there were minor territorial shifts elsewhere in the Empire, the most important outcome of the Peace of Westphalia was international recognition of the Dutch Republic as an independent state and the final acknowledgement (for it had been obvious to everyone for some time) that both Northern Italy and the Swiss Confederacy were no longer de jure parts of the Empire.Actions
