Description
Nguyen Trai (1380-1442) was a prominent Vietnamese Confucian statesman, political strategist, scholar and poet (under the pen name Uc Trai). Born in Thang Long (modern-day Hanoi), he played a crucial role in the Lam Son uprising led by Le Loi against the Ming dynasty's occupation of Dai Viet, acting as the emperor's mentor and principal advisor. Nguyen Trai's contributions were instrumental in the success of the rebellion, leading to the establishment of the Le dynasty. He was known for his strategic acumen and his ability to inspire the Vietnamese people through his writings, wartime propaganda and alleged miracles. His most famous work - the 'Great Proclamation upon the Pacification of the Wu' - is considered a masterpiece of Vietnamese literature. Despite his invaluable contributions to the cause of Vietnamese independence, Nguyen Trai's life ended tragically when he and his family were executed in 1442 following a scandal in which his concubine Nguyen Thi Lo began an affair with the new emperor, Le Thai Tong. The young emperor died not long after having paid a visit to Nguyen Trai's home, and many at court accused Nguyen Trai of having poisoned the emperor in revenge for his own personal humiliation. As a result, Nguyen Trai was condemned for regicide, and his family put to death... although they received a posthumous pardon from Le Thai Tong's son, Le Nhan Tong, twenty years later.Actions
