Action C of 26021 - The Regreg War for Majapahit
Description
By the late 15th century the once vast Majapahit Empire had been in terminal decline for decades, unable - through inertia, corruption and a series of weak kings - to overcome the major challenges that led to its final collapse in 1527. The empire, which had flourished on the island of Java and extended its influence across much of the East Indies, began to weaken after the death of its illustrious king Hayam Wuruk in 1389. His successor, Wikramawardhana, whilst energetic and ambitious, lacked the necessary skils and personality to reverse such systemic decline, and the ineffectual reigns of his daughter - Suhita - and in turn her younger brother - Kertawijaya (who converted to Islam) - marked the end of the old Rajasa dynasty. The spread of Islam along the northern coast of Java introduced new political and religious challenges, leading to the rise of Islamic sultanates that gradually eroded Majapahit's power as the old Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms fell. Internal strife and succession disputes further destabilized the empire, which had already been fundamentally weakened by the disastrous Regreg War (1404-1406). In 1478, the capital city of Wilwatikta was sacked during a succession war between rival kings Girindrawardhana and Kertabhumi, and in 1527 it was completely destroyed when the emerging Demak Sultanate - a Majapahit vassal - rose up and took over the remnants of the crippled empire. This event marked the end of the Majapahit era, as the once mighty Hindu-Buddhist empire was replaced by a series of Islamic sultanates. Many of the surviving Majapahit nobility and intelligentsia fled to the island of Bali, which became the final bastion of Hindu Javanese culture.Actions
