Description

Unlike the large Islamic Mandé empires to their north, Oyo and other Yoruba-speaking states rejected foreign political influences and retained their indigenous (pagan) religion as a core facet of their independence. By its peak in the early 18th century, the Oyo Empire spanned some 60,000 square miles and held many of its neighbours in vassalage. Oyo's power was in large part projected through its large force of cavalry - one of the few Yoruba states to do so. By the time European merchants had been able to explore Oyo in the late 18th century, Islam was found to be restriced to small communities in the larger towns, and a number of officials in the capital - Oyo-Ile - who were capable of writing and calculating in Arabic.
