Description

In 1379 another force from the Iberian peninsula, the Navarrese Company, moved on from its efforts to conquer Albania and attacked the Catalan Duchy of Athens in concert with a Florentine force led by Nerio I Acciaioli. Finally, in 1388 the Florentine army defeated the Catalans in a decisive battle at Kaledes (a.k.a. Peritheorion or Anastasioupolis), at the far end of Lake Vistonis on the road from Xanthi to Komotini. Following this defeat and the subsequent loss of their Duchy, the Catalan Company disbanded.

Brittany — Not random

Conditions

  • None of the following must occur:

    • Brittany and England are at war

Will happen on November 2, 1399

Description

John V of Brittany (also John IV in French sources) succeeded his father John IV (III) as head of the pro-English Montfort faction in the War of the Breton Succession (1341-1365), continuing the fight against Joan of Penthièvre of the French-backed Dreux faction. Joan ruled alongside her husband Charles of Blois - a nephew of Philip VI of France - who had almost conquered Brittany at the time of his death at the Battle of Auray in 1364, in which John's Anglo-Breton alliance scored a decisive victory. Following the battle, John - dubbed 'le Conquéreur' - clawed back most of the duchy from the pro-French forces and forced the widowed Joan to accept him as Duke. Like many of the Montfort dukes of Brittany, John was also Earl of Richmond and an ally of the English king, whose support had been vital in the reconquest of the duchy. Despite this show of support, the Breton nobility were resentful of the privileges enjoyed by English merchants and whalers, and John chose to pledge his allegiance to Charles VI of France rather than Henry IV of England - fearful of the threat of a French invasion. By the time of his death in November 1399, John had successfully restored the independence of his duchy and managed to balance relations with both England and France, a task which his elder son and successor John VI (V) would find increasingly difficult to achieve. John's younger son was Arthur de Richemont, who briefly succeeded his elder brother as Duke after serving as Constable of France alongside Joan of Arc.

Description

The decisive battle of the great war between the Golden Horde and Grand Duke Vytautas' coalition of Eastern European crusaders was fought at the banks of the Vorskla River in August 1399, in which Edigu - the Khan who had reunified all of Jochi's former lands across the Steppe - slaughtered the crusaders with a combination of superior numbers and a series of feigned retreats and encirclements carried out by his nephew Timur Qutluq. The battle resulted in the deaths of several leading crusaders, including the rulers of Polotsk and Moldavia, and Vytautas himself barely escaped alive. One of the crusaders' senior commanders was none other than Tokhtamysh, a Borjigin prince who had ruled the Horde before Edigu and previously fought both for and against the great Mongol warlord Timur. By 1400, having escaped Edigu's forces fighting in Russia, Tokhtamysh proclaimed himself Khan of Sibir and raised a rebellion in the eastern flank of the Golden Horde.

Description

Robert III had come to the throne at the relatively old age of 53 and not been considered a particularly successful king. Physically disabled following a horse-kick that nearly killed him, Robert - who had been named John until he became king - had often relied on the counsel of a select number of key advisors such as the Earl of Douglas, who had been killed leading a Scots army against the English in 1388. With his health failing and his authority ebbing away, Robert's elder son David, Duke of Rothesay, was appointed Lieutenant of Scotland and effectively his father's regent. However, the regency council itself was dominated by Robert's younger brother the Duke of Albany, an ambitious man who wished to sideline the senior Stewart line and claim the throne for himself. Powerless to resist the machinations of his brother and son, Robert retired to his estates and became little more than a figurehead. Matters came to a head in 1401, when Albany had Rothesay imprisoned following a heated argument, and Rothesay subsequently died in prison - likely on Albany's orders. Despite the murky circumstances of Rothesay's death and the fact that Albany was the main beneficiary of it, he was officially cleared of any involvement and nominated as Lieutenant in Rothesay's place. With the death of his eldest son and heir, Robert tried to have his younger son James, Earl of Carrick, sent to the relative safety of the French court, but Carrick was intercepted en route and delivered as a hostage to Henry IV of England, following news of which Robert died in April 1406.

Description

The Welsh Revolt was the final coordinated large-scale rebellion by the native Welsh against English rule. Led by the charismatic Owain Glyndwr, Prince of Wales, the rebels managed to unite most of the country and storm several English castles, from which successive raids and skirmishes bolstered the rebel cause and swelled their ranks. Though Glyndwr himself was never killed or captured, his rebellion was put down over a ten-year period from 1400, and the future Henry V - then heir to the throne - earned his spurs fighting rebels across both Wales and Northern England. By 1415 the rebellion had died out, English control of Wales had been restored, and the new king had set his sights on matters in France.

Description

Repression of the Lollards began under Richard II but escalated during the reign of Henry IV, as the usurper needed the Church's support in order to consolidate his legitimacy. The first Lollard martyr was William Sawtre, a rector from Norfolk, in 1401. Royal decrees forbade the use of English versions of the Bible, and anyone who made the mistake to discuss the reality of transubtantiation was immediately accused of heresy. Forced with such restraints, the Lollard movement was forced to move underground.

Description

One of the greatest and most energetic rulers of the medieval era, Sigismund was a younger son of Emperor Charles IV and the last male member of the Luxemburg dynasty. He became king of Hungary in 1385 following the death of his wife Mary of Anjou - by whose right he had ruled since 1382 - and was elected king of Germany in 1410, before succeeding his elder brother Wenceslaus as king of Bohemia in 1419. Sigismund was supremely ambitious, though less in a personal sense and more as what he perceived as his role in unifying Christendom against common threats - be it the Turks at the Crusade of Nicopolis (1396) or fanatical heretics during the Hussite Wars (from 1419). Sigismund also played a leading role in the Council of Constance - the Vatican's efforts to mend the Western Schism - and fought against Poland and Venice whilst forming alliances with England and Austria. The early years of his reign were dominated by tensions with his brother Wenceslaus, the King of Bohemia, and cousin Jobst (Jodocus), the Elector of Brandenburg, both of whom remained potential threats until their deaths. The other major issue facing Sigismund was the civil war being fought in Hungary between the supporters of Sigismund (who inherited his wife Mary's claim) and those of Ladislaus of Naples, a distant Angevin relative of Mary's who had conquered Dalmatia. Ultimately, Sigismund would prevail and Ladislaus sold his claim to Venice, which later led to wars between the Republic and Hungary. Sigismund's latter years were spent leading Catholic resistance against the Hussites and entangling himself in various alliances across the Balkans and Germany, before finally being elected Emperor in 1433. He died in 1437, undoubtedly the most important ruler of the Holy Roman Empire until Charles V and the height of Habsburg hegemony in the 16th century.

Description

Vytautas had been Grand Duke of Lithuania since 1392, ostensibly as regent for his cousin and friend Jogaila, who had ruled Poland since 1386 as Wladyslaw II. Both men were the sons of previous rulers of Lithuania, and by the early 1400s had fought together alongside a coalition of German crusaders and Eastern European princes against the Mongols of the Golden Horde. A potential crisis arose in 1399 with the deaths of Jogaila's wife Queen Jadwiga and their baby in childbirth, which left Jogaila isolated and weakened his influence over the Polish nobility. With neither Vytautas nor Jogaila having sons, each effectively became the other's heir, and a series of Treaties of Union were signed which helped bring the two realms closer together and provide for the other's succession in case either ruler died prematurely. Following the Mongol victory at Vorskla River in 1399, Vytautas narrowly escaped back to Lithuania and began plotting his next campaign: one option discussed was a joint Lithuanian-Teutonic invasion of Pskov and Novgorod, whilst another was turning on the Teutonic Order and reconquering Samogitia - Vytautas' ancestral home, which he'd been forced to cede to the Order in exchange for them pacifying the remaining pagans.

Description

The last ruler of the ancient House of Estridsen, Margaret I was the youngest daughter of Valdemar IV 'Atterdag' - whom she succeeded as ruler of Denmark in 1375 - and the wife of Haakon VI of Norway. Following the deaths of Haakon in 1380 and their son Olaf in 1387, Margaret was Queen of both Norway and Denmark, and in 1389 she was invited to become Queen of Sweden following the deposition of Albert of Mecklenburg. To cement her rule and bring stability to her domains, in 1397 Margaret issued the Treaty of Kalmar, in which the three realms were formally united into an 'eternal' personal union. Though the three kingdoms retained their distinct legal traditions and were never merged, the newly-forged Kalmar Union remained more or less intact until Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden in 1523. During the end of her reign, having secured the succession for her great-nephew Eric of Pomerania, Margaret considered a marriage alliance with a number of European powers in order enhance the Kalmar Union's prestige and provide it with external support in the event of a rebellion against Eric's rule. One option considered was a double marriage alliance with England - in which Eric married Henry IV's daughter Philippa and his sister Catherine married Henry's son, the future Henry V - but this was deemed likely to drag Margaret's realms into the Hundred Years' War, and in the end only the marriage between Eric and Philippa went ahead.

Ottoman Empire — Not random

Will happen on July 21, 1402

After the death of Bâyezîd I, a massive host of Ottoman pretenders began to vie for head of the Sultanate. Later in the civil war, another of Bâyezîd's sons, Musa would enter the fray with the support of his Karamanid allies.

Description

Venice had prospered for much of the 14th century, acquiring a string of ports and colonies throughout the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, and successfully securing its possessions from the increasingly aggressive Turks. Crete was subdued in 1368, the Genoese fleet had been devastated in 1381, and by the end of the century a number of towns in the Veneto had been annexed, leaving the Republic free to continue its expansion along the Aegean coast into Dalmatia. Venetian control over Dalmatia was considered essential for the Republic because it would allow a land connection between its territories in Istria and Albania, which otherwise could only be reinforced by sea. In the early 1400s the Hungarian civil war between Ladislaus of Naples and Sigismund of Luxemburg provided the opportunity Venice needed: Ladislaus had all but lost the war and held only Dalmatia and parts of Slavonia, which he could ill-afford to supply and reinforce. Before returning to Naples in 1409, Ladislaus sold his territorial rights to Venice, allowing the Republic to quickly conquer its way down the coast.

Ethiopia — Not random

Conditions

Will happen within 60 days of January 2, 1403
Checked again every 60 days until trigger is met (cannot happen after January 2, 1405)

Description

The ancient Jewish communities of Beta Israel had lived in the lands of the old Axum kingdom since time immemorial, and the Solomonid dynasty claimed descent (and thus its legitimacy to rule) from the eponymous King Solomon and the legendary Queen of Sheba. Originally, a number of local rulers in East Africa practised Judaism, but over the centuries war, trade and diplomacy had seen them adopt the emergent faiths of Christianity and Islam - or in rarer cases, revert to local pagan beliefs. By the end of the 14th century, the few remaining non-Muslim realms in the region were limited to the Coptic kingdoms of Nubia and the Oriental Orthodox Empire of Ethiopia. The remaining tribes of Beta Israel - such as the old royal family of Gideon - continued to lose power and influence owing to their refusal to convert, and over time were pushed further west. Though sporadic rebellions occurred, they were generally small in scale, uncoordinated, and posed little threat to the ruling Solomonid dynasty. The final major revolt took place in Gonder during the reign of Dawit I (1382-1413), after which the Beta Israelis were forcibly converted and assimilated into Ethiopian society.

Description

The turn of the 15th century saw the territorial apogee of the Majapahit Empire, with numerous client kingdoms under its sway and holding a virtual monopoly on the lucrative East Indies trade routes. Despite this vast material wealth and geopolitical influence, it suffered from recurrent succession crises, and the state itself was an ineffectual bureaucracy that rarely enjoyed any kind of cohesive strategic leadership. Perhaps the single most destructive event in Majapahit's history was the Regreg War, in which the Emperor Wikramawardhana, based in western Java and Sumatra, was challenged by his eastern vassal Bhre Wirabhumi, a powerful Javanese prince who wished to influence imperial diplomacy towards his backers in Ming China and away from the Emperor's preferred allies in Southeast Asia. This civil war did immense damage to Wikramawardhana, already weakened by a moribund foreign policy and having designated his daughter Suhita as his heir. Following the deaths of Suhita and her brother Kertawijaya, Majapahit would finally collapse.

Teutonic Order — Not random

Will happen within 60 days of January 2, 1405
Checked again every 60 days until trigger is met (cannot happen after January 2, 1409)

Description

The mostly pagan region of Samogitia had been ceded to the Teutonic Order in 1398 by Vytautas the Great of Lithuania as a means of pacifying the region. The acquisition of Samogitia also connected the southern (Teutonic) and northern (Livonian) branches of the Order's territories, and allowed Vytautas to call on the Order's aid in future Lithuanian military campaigns. Resentful of the German crusaders who now ruled them, the local population instigated several major revolts against the Order, and even called on Vytautas to send Lithuanian soldiers to come to their defence. The first uprising took place around the turn of the century, whilst the second - which began in 1409 - quickly escalated into a major conflict between the Order and an alliance of Vytautas and his liege, Wladyslaw II of Poland.

Conditions

  • Khmer Empire is a vassal of Ayutthaya

Will happen within 60 days of January 2, 1405
Checked again every 60 days until trigger is met (cannot happen after January 2, 1410)

Description

The Khmer Empire had battled with a number of neighboring states since its foundation in 802 by Jayavarman II, and by the 14th century its chief rival was the Ayutthaya Kingdom of Siam. Following persistent Khmer raids into Siam, the imperial capital Angkor had been captured by Ayutthayan forces in 1353 and again in 1394, each time resulting in Siamese princes ruling the Khmer state as an Ayutthayan vassal. The final Siamese overlord of Khmer was In Reachea, son of the Ayutthayan king Ramesuan, who was assassinated in 1405 - after which his forces fled the country. Following a brief period of anarchy, the native Khmer warlord Ponhea Yat declared himself king as Borom Reachea II, ruling until 1431 as the final Khmer king, and subsequently until his death in 1463 as the first king of Cambodia.

Will happen within 60 days of January 2, 1405
Checked again every 60 days until trigger is met (cannot happen after January 2, 1412)

Description

The First (1405-1412) and Second (1419-1423) Scutari Wars were conflicts fought between the small Principality of Zeta (originally a vassal of the Serbian Empire) and the Republic of Venice over control of the Dalmatian coast, with various Albanian and Serbian rulers involving themselves intermittently. A primary catalyst for the dispute was the pro-Venetian policies of Zeta's ruling prince Durad II (1385-1403), who had sold Scutari and several other trading towns to Venice in 1396, having previously also converted to Roman Catholicism as a gesture of good will towards the Republic. Durad's widow, Jelena, was the sister of Stefan the Tall, the Despot of Serbia, and a devout Orthodox Christian. Following Durad's death in battle against the Turks in 1402, his seventeen-year-old son Balsa III became Prince and Jelena his regent. Now in control of Zeta's affairs, Jelena promptly reverted the state religion to Serbian Orthodoxy and entered into an alliance with her brother, thereby provoking the Venetians into seizing further towns along the coast. Balsa responded by waging a ten-year war against the Venetians, dividing his loyalties between the Serbs and the Ottoman Turks as the political narrative shifted. By the time he died in 1421 the war had ground to a stalemate and Balsa - who had no sons - had named his uncle Stefan as heir to Zeta, which meant the Principality reverted to the Serbian crown and the war - now led by Stefan - would drag on for another two years.

Description

In T'aejo II's time, the 'Kwajonpop' (rank land law) was instituted, providing not only land for him to distribute but also the power to rule the country. He and his cabal were well aware that the ability to bring order and to end the decadent Koryo Dynasty lay in the land tenure system. Under the terms of status land system, land was ordinarily distributed for life only, on the basis of one's status or rank. Recipients were given the right to collect rent, while the peasant was given the right to cultivate their lot. The customary rent amounted to half the crop and was usually paid as rent-tax to the state. Since the peasant, as tenant, was guaranteed land tenure in terms of cultivation rights, not subject to confiscation, his livelihood was improved.

Burgundy — Not random

Conditions

  • Own Flandern

Will happen on March 17, 1405

Description

Margaret III of Flanders was the last-surviving heiress of the house of Dampierre, and as such one of the wealthiest nobles in France. As the only legitimate child of Louis II of Flanders, with his death in 1384 she would become countess of Flanders in her own right. In 1355 Margaret married her first husband, Philip I of Burgundy, thereby becoming duchess of Burgundy and countess of Artois, Auvergne and Boulogne by marriage, but when Philip died at only 15 his liege John II of France claimed Philip's titles for the crown. In 1369 the widowed Margaret was subsequently married to her first husband's successor as duke, Philip II of Burgundy, who had been given the appanage by his father, John II of France, five years earlier. With her father's death in 1384, Margaret and Philip II inherited the counties of Flanders, Artois, Nevers and Rethel, as well as the Imperial county of Burgundy (Franche-Comté). Margaret's death in March 1405 meant her vast inheritance went to their eldest son, John I of Burgundy, who then became ruler of a large, exceptionally wealthy patchwork of territories stretching from the Swiss border to the North Sea. John's successors would continue to expand the so-called Burgundian State further into the Low Countries and the former territory of Lotharingia, eventually opting to style themselves 'Grand Duke of the West' and mount a serious challenge to the Kings of France for supremacy of the region.

Description

The late 14th century had been a time of unprecedented calamity for Dai Viet, and saw it ravaged by plague, famine, rebellion and repeat invasions by the neighboring Champa kingdom. By the turn of the century, the ruling Tran dynasty had been overthrown by the short-lived Ho dynasty, whose attempts at bringing stability and establishing peaceful relations with China would prove futile. To make matters worse, exiled members of the Tran dynasty lobbied the Yongle Emperor to intervene on their behalf, believing that the Ming dynasty would safeguard a restored Tran dynasty if they were favorably disposed to China. The matter was finally decided in 1406, when the Yongle Emperor sent his favorite general, Zhang Fu, at the head of 200,000 Chinese soldiers to conquer Dai Viet. Zhang Fu's army was undoubtedly the most advanced on Earth at that time - his forces were equipped with thunderclap bombs, multiple kinds of cannon, handguns, grenades and rudimentary rocket artillery.

Description

The 14th century saw a number of wars between the Bahmani Sultanate and the Vijayanagara Empire, with the two states - one Muslim, the other Hindu - fostering a deep rivalry until their collapse in the 16th century. The Bahmani sultan Furuz Shah (1397-1422) led several campaigns south into Vijayanagar, scoring notable victories in 1398 and 1406, but suffering a major defeat to his great rival Deva Raya I (1406-1422) in 1419. During this period territorial exchanges between the two empires were common, and the wealthy spice port of Goa changed hands several times. Border raids and ad-hoc battles were fought with increasing regularity, and peace treaties including slaves, jewels and elephants as tributes were signed - and broken - in order to bring peace to the mostly Telugu borderlands between the two realms.

Timurid Empire — Not random

Will happen on February 23, 1407

Description

Pir Muhammad was the son of Jahangir Mirza, Timur's favourite son and heir-designate until his early death in 1376. As various other uncles and brothers were either killed in battle or murdered during Timur's long reign, Pir Muhammad had managed to succeed his grandfather in 1405 - although without any real political or military support. A competent general, Pir Muhammad had led the Timurid vanguard into India in 1397 and ruled briefly as governor of Multan. However, following Timur's death he struggled to assemble allies across the Timurid Empire, and within two years had been overthrown by his cousin Khalil Sultan.

France — Not random

Will happen on November 24, 1407

Description

As Charles VI's madness began to slip greater into insanity, factions emerged in a bid for control of the throne. As brother to the king, Louis of Orléans had a strong claim to head the regency and guardianship of the royal children. On the other side was his uncle, Philip of Burgundy, who had appointed himself regent in 1392. Their fight to control the royal treasury would outlive the both of them. Philip's son, John the Fearless, also managed to have himself appointed guardian of the Dauphin, following his father's death in 1404. Soon John and Louis began making threats on each other's lives. When, in 1407, Louis was hacked apart by a mob of armed men, none doubted that John was to blame.

Action C of 26028 - The Samogitian Uprisings for Teutonic Order

Description

Terra Mariana ('Land of Mary') was the name for the lands carved out by the Teutonic Order in pagan Livonia during the Lithuanian Crusade of the 13th century, which they subsequently colonized and converted by force. By the early 14th century Livonia had been caught up in the struggles between the pagan Samogitians and newly-baptized Lithuanians to the south, and in 1409 the Teutonic Order invaded Poland - the result was a series of minor skirmishes followed by a truce before the end of the year. However, in 1410 the combined forces of the Polish king Wladyslaw II and his Lithuanian vassal duke Vytautas launched a surprise attack against the Order at Tannenberg (Grunwald), scoring a decisive victory and killing much of the Order's leadership in one of the largest battles ever fought in Europe. Though comprehensively defeated on the battlefield, the Order's remaining forces stubbornly defended its holdings and withstood the siege of Malbork Castle, thereby denying the Poles and Lithuanians any major territorial gains in the subsequent Peace of Thorn (1411). Had the battle had a different result, or had the Order taken the initiative and attacked first, its future may well have been very different. As it was, Tannenberg confirmed Poland and Lithuania as the dominant powers of Eastern Europe, and finally halted the Order's territorial expansion.

Timurid Empire — Not random

Will happen on May 14, 1409

Description

Khalil Sultan was the son of Miran Shah, a son of Timur who had been excluded from the succession for being hedonistic and mentally unstable. A favourite of his grandfather, Khalil Sultan distinguished himself during campaigns in India and Transoxiana during the early 1400s and overthrew his cousin Pir Muhammad in 1407 after seizing the royal treasury at Samarkand. Though an effective general, Khalil Sultan was easily led and relied heavily on low-born favourites to administer his territories, and his popularity waned following regional famines and perceived widespread corruption. Khalil Sultan's brief reign ended in May 1409, when his uncle Shâh Rûkh entered Samarkand unopposed and proclaimed himself Amir.

Description

In 1409, a group of cardinals and bishops called the Council of Pisa to address the ongoing schism and its resolution. Both of the reigning popes, the Bishop of Avignon and Bishop of Rome, chose not to attend the gathering. After having given two months for the pontiffs to appear, the Fathers of Pisa took a most unprecedented step. The Patriarch of Alexandria, Simon de Cramaud, declared to the gathered assembly, 'Benedict XIII and Gregory XII are recognized as schismatics, the approvers and makers of schism, notorious heretics, guilty of perjury and violation of solemn promises, and openly scandalizing the universal Church. In consequence, they are declared unworthy of the Sovereign Pontificate, and are ipso facto deposed from their functions and dignities, and even driven out of the Church. It is forbidded to them henceforward to consider themselves to be Sovereign Pontiffs, and all proceedings and promotions made by them are annulled. The Holy See is declared vacant and the faithful are set free from their promise of obedience.' After over a week of consultation, the gathered cardinals elected unanimously Cardinal Peter Philarghi to take up St. Peter's throne as Pope Alexander V. In short order, the Pisan pope was recognized by the majority of the Church.

Description

The Ming-Kotte War was a conflict between a naval expeditionary force of the Ming explorer Zheng He and forces of the Sinhalese kingdom of Kotte on the island of Ceylon. The war broke out in 1410 when Zheng He's treasure fleet arrived at Kotte and his forces overthrew the reigning king Alakeshvara, installed a rival puppet king in his place, and attempted to force Kotte to become a tributary of the Yongle Emperor. Once the new regime had been put in place, Zheng He's fleet left Kotte to map out other areas of South East Asia and destroy various pirate networks threatening Ming trade routes. Once his fleet finally returned to China, Zheng He was tasked with leading a return voyage to Kotte with the aim of capturing Alakeshvara and installing the Emperor's ally Parakramabahu as king.

Description

In the early 15th century, the Portuguese wished to upgrade their commerce of wine, fish and salt to more lucrative goods such as as slaves, gold and spices. Their first objective in this military and commercial imperialism was to be the fortified city of Ceuta, near Tangiers, where a large Berber Muslim community lived. This 'crusading' campaign, organized by King John and led by his son Henry 'the Navigator' in 1415, resulted in success for Portugal. John chose to keep this strategic location rather than razing or abandoning it, as it could be used as a staging point for future invasion or colonization.

Description

In 1410 the Aragonese king Martin the Ecclesiastic died - according to legend, from laughing at a joke told by his court jester - without naming an heir. He had been the last legitimate male of the ancient House of Barcelona, his sons having predeceased him, and a new king had to be chosen. The primary candidates were Louis d'Anjou and Jaume d'Urgell, but soon enough Ferdinand de Trastámara - brother of the Castilian king Henry III - became interested in the possibility of obtaining the vacant crown, and Martin's bastard grandson Frederic de Luna - his only living male descendant - put himself forward as a claimant and had himself declared legitimate by the Aragonese Antipope Benedict XIII. Unable to find a solution and confronted with the possibility of a civil war ('ad evitandum rupturam manifestissime imminentem') the parliaments of the three sub-kingdoms (Aragon, Valencia and Catalonia) decided to appoint nine representatives (three for each kingdom) to meet in the Aragonese town of Caspe in 1412 to choose the new king. The Aragonese voted for Ferdinand, the Valencians voted two for Ferdinand and one abstention, and the Catalans voted one for Ferdinand and two for Jaume d'Urgell.

Description

Being constantly in dispute with his father, having probably organised plots against him, 'Prince Hal' was not really the ideal chivalrous noble shown by Shakespeare and contemporary authors. Having finally accepted to wait for his turn (his father's illness helped him to be patient), Henry was crowned in 1413. England was not really in a good situation, but after the constant struggles and rebellions known during the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV, it appeared that the new King was luckily in a far better position: he was of age to rule, his legitimacy was not contested (though his father had been viewed as a usurper, the younger Henry was not), and his chief rivals were dead. For the first time since Edward II, almost a century earlier, a succession didn't cause major troubles: the new King could therefore focus on active policies, firstly against Wales and the Lollards, and later against France...

Description

Following the murder of Louis, Duke of Orléans in November 1407, his supporters (the Armagnacs) began a civil war with those of his murderer, John the Fearless (the Burgundians). This conflict, headed initially by Bernard of Armagnac on one side and John himself on the other - until his own murder in September 1419 (largely a reprisal for Louis' assassination) - dragged on for the best part of 30 years, with hostilities flaring up intermittently, often in tandem with the ongoing Hundred Years' War between England and France. An important arbiter in this conflict was the King of England, whom both sides sought as an ally against the other. Henry IV initially erred towards the Armagnacs in an effort to uphold the fragile peace treaty with France, whereas his more belligerent son Henry V threw his lot in with the Burgundians in order to divide and weaken opposition to his own claim to the French throne. Following the deaths of both Henry V and the insane Charles VI in 1422, and the subsequent Treaty of Arras in 1435, the victorious Charles VII definitively put an end to the bitter rivalry between the Armagnacs and Burgundians. By the end of the Hundred Years' War in 1453, many of those involved in the initial dispute were long dead, and France's ultimate victory had buried the rivalry along with them.

Description

The Great Frisian War began as a dispute between the East Frisian chieftains Keno II tom Brok and Hisko Abdena, eventually boiling over into open warfare and resulting in the formation of two opposing power blocs: the Fetkeapers - led by the tom Brok and van Bronckhorst families - and the Skieringers - supporters of the Abdena clan. Though various domestic issues such as the rights of the Frisian nobility ('haadlingen') were used as a pretext, the war was primarily a blood feud between the two ruling families, and a series of battles were fought across Middle and East Frisia over a nine year period (1413-1422). Despite being a civil war confined to Frisia itself, two notable foreign interventions were made by the German king Sigismund on behalf of the Fetkeapers, and the Bavarian duke John III in support of the Skieringers. To complicate the situation, John - who was also count of neighboring Holland - decided that since he'd been called in to lead the Skieringer forces, he may as well claim Frisia for himself. He subsequently brought in mercenaries from both Holland and Bavaria, and erected fortifications at strategic points along the Frisian coast. Ultimately, as neither they nor the Fetkeapers wished Frisia to become the vassal of a foreign ruler, the Skieringers revolted against John and by 1422 had made peace with one another and forced John out of the country.

Description

By the early 15th century, wokou (Japanese pirates) had been raiding Korea's coasts for around 200 years. Similar to the Barbary pirates in Europe, they sacked coastal settlements and took plunder, cattle and locals to sell as slaves. The Joseon court's response to these sporadic attacks was often confused, and usually by the time a fleet had been assembled the wokou had long since fled Korean waters in order to carry out attacks along the coasts of China and Japan. Though the wokou had many bases throughout East Asia, their main fortress was on Tsushima Island in the straits between Korea and the Japanese island of Kyushu, and it was there to which the Joseon court dispatched a military expedition in 1418. Led by the Korean general Yi Jong-mu, the Gihae Expedition - known in Japan as the Oei Invasion - was tasked with destroying the pirate bases on the island and rescuing any captives. The result of the attack - which met surprisingly little resistance - was a significant decline in wokou attacks on China and Korea, with many of the surviving pirates instead raiding north up the Japanese coast until the wokou were finally stamped out by Japanese anti-piracy patrols in the 17th century.

Description

The Ming dynasty had conquered Dai Viet in 1406 and annexed the state into China as Jiaozhi Province. Despite the ruthless devastation carried out by the Ming armies and the relative swiftness of their victory over the defending Dai Viet, the Vietnamese lands would prove extremely difficult to pacify. Initial resistance was provided by supporters and exiled nobles of the recently overthrown Tran dynasty, but by 1418 the provincial warlord Le Loi had begun orchestrating a series of larger rebellions against Ming rule. Whilst the Yongle Emperor dispatched a number of senior generals with large armies and hoped to put the rebellion down quickly with a decisive pitched battle, Le Loi divided his forces into smaller regional partisan groups and favored using guerrilla tactics to wear down and demoralize the occupying Chinese. Though the superior Ming armies were initially successful and in 1422 Le Loi had sued for peace, by 1428 his relentless campaign of attrition and coordinated surprise attacks had exhausted the Emperor's resolve. In April 1428, with the defeated Chinese having finally withdrawn from the country, the victorious Le Loi declared himself Emperor of Dai Viet and restored his nation's independence.

Action A of 26019 - The Death of Timur for Timurid Empire

Description

Though the civil wars which characterized the Ottoman Interregnum would drag on for another eight years, the death of Timur in February 1405 led to a brief respite for the beleaguered Turks, whose armies - like everyone else's - had been repeatedly smashed by Timur's. The great warlord's unexpected death led to the first of many civil wars, in which - as at the death of Alexander the Great - various relatives and renowned generals fought for control of his vast empire. These internecine struggles in Central Asia led to the outer edges of the Timurid realm making their bids for freedom, and by 1413 Bâyezîd's fourth son Mehmed had consolidated power in Anatolia and overseen the Ottoman Revival.

Description

During the time of the Great Western Schism, support for the Papacy was undermined by the emergence of various antipopes who squabbled over legitimacy, nationality and whether it was permissible for the Pope to be based outside of Rome. The Avignon candidate was Pope Benedict XIII, an Aragonese nobleman whose chief claim to papal legitimacy was the fact he was the only surviving cardinal ordained by Pope Gregory XI, the last undisputed Pope. With the exception of the King of Aragon, a patron and close ally of Pope Benedict, most rulers chose to support the Pope who was most advantageous to their current schemes.
